From a very young age, Thakani Mehta, 52, from Barju 1, Sunsari was always aware of gender inequalities and female violence prevalent in her community. Being a young uneducated female in a patriarchal society she often left things unsaid. It was only later as she started engaging herself with social activism that she found courage to speak out and use her voice. In 2015, Thakani and her organization Navajyoti Women Federation pressured national government to pass a bill against violence related to witchcraft, which was successfully drafted in 2015. Thakani’s strong resistance against conservative practices, gender based violence and child abuse has garnered a lot of hate and hurdles from local government and community. She believes it is her robust self-belief and work ethics that has helped her keep moving.

Najboon is the first Muslim women to pass SLC from Ward no 13, Pokhara, Gandaki zone. She is the one to form Ama Samuha in her community through which she raised funds to establish a school.
Shushila Chaudhari worked grazing cows for most of her childhood while also protecting her mother from her father’s abuse. Even when she started school at 13 years old, the lack of a school uniform meant that she had to drop out eventually, and could only continue after she was given old uniforms. After teaching an adult school, she could finally afford to buy copies and gave SLC. Afterwards, she went to work to Banglore to free herself from her debt and eventually returned. As she entered politics for Tharu people and women’s cause, she and her community experienced sexual and physical violence and rape at the hand of the police and anti-federalist forces.
Kamalapati Chaudhari spent most of her childhood away from her family as a Kamlari at a stranger’s house. Even though she married at 18, her husband’s family was still bonded so she still had to work as a Kamaiya. After the Kamaiya Andolan resulted in the freeing of Kamaiya in 2057 B.S., they had to flee to “under the trees and towards the fields”. Right now, she is still in revolt, fighting for the rights of ex-Kamaiyas and other marginalized people.
Pyari Chaudhari spent most of her childhood working instead of studying as it was not customary in her village for women to study. After she married her husband, she had to spend night and day working at others’ homes to raise her children. Despite this, she barely got half of what she worked for. After her children were 5-6 years old, the landlords asked her to make them work in others’ houses. Even though they initially agreed, it became clear that the children couldn’t work and she left for her father’s house with her husband and children. But around this time, the Maoist War started, due to which it became difficult for her to live there and she joined the Tharu Revolt.
Shanta Chaudhary received an opportunity for education unlike many of her contemporaries, as her father was an Executive Member of the local school and believed that girls should be able to receive schooling and education. However, in grade seven she left formal education to pursue informal education through Backward Society Education (BASE), of which she was also a Founding Member. Her community, inspired by her successes in education, started to build an environment for homeschooling. Afterwards, she participated in the Kamaiya Revolt institutionally. However, after the CDO refused their application to free Kamaiyas, she and her fellow activists took it to the streets and protested. Her landlord, seeing her protest in TV, evicted her. Eventually, the revolt led to the liberation of Kamaiya people from the bondage system.
