At 22, Sarina Gurung joined SIWA with limited practical experience, uncertainty about her future and a fear of being judged for her Nepali language skills. The experience challenged her understanding of feminist leadership, advocacy and participation, while helping her build confidence in her own voice. In this personal reflection, Sarina shares how SIWA shaped the way she understands leadership, feminism and community engagement, and why she believes finding her own voice is only the beginning of creating space for other young women to find theirs.

Ajita’s journey began with a deep curiosity about education and a growing awareness of the realities faced by women in her community. While still in school, she began engaging in community work and working with young people. Even after getting married at sixteen and taking on family responsibilities, she continued to seek opportunities to learn, participate, and contribute to her community. Her experiences working with different organizations gradually opened her eyes to a deeper problem: communities, particularly Dalit communities, were often at the centre of development programmes but did not always receive the recognition, opportunities, or meaningful benefits they deserved. This realization became a turning point in her life. Rather than accepting the system as it was, Ajita decided to build something of her own. With the support of her colleagues and community members, she established an independent organization rooted in community leadership and collective action. The journey has brought challenges, from limited resources and institutional barriers to skepticism toward Dalit women taking leadership. Yet Ajita continues to stand firm in her belief that marginalized communities should not simply be represented but should have the power to lead, organize, and shape their own futures. Her story is a journey from lived experience to leadership and from witnessing injustice to building a space for change.

गीता विश्वकर्मा सर्लाही जिल्लाको लालबन्दी नगरपालिका–७ की दलित महिला वडा सदस्य हुनुहुन्छ। विद्यार्थी जीवनदेखि नै नेतृत्व र सामाजिक गतिविधिमा सक्रिय उहाँले विभिन्न सामाजिक संस्थामा सहजकर्ता र कर्मचारीका रूपमा काम गर्दै महिलाको सशक्तीकरण, बाल अधिकार तथा दलित समुदायको अधिकारका क्षेत्रमा योगदान दिनुभएको छ। निरन्तर अध्ययन, संघर्ष र सामाजिक सेवाबाट प्रेरित हुँदै उहाँ राजनीतिमा सक्रिय हुनुभयो र हाल निर्वाचित जनप्रतिनिधिका रूपमा दलित तथा महिलाको अधिकार, बजेट सुनिश्चितता र समुदाय सशक्तीकरणका लागि काम गरिरहनुभएको छ। उहाँको जीवनयात्रामा बाल संरक्षण संस्थाकी अध्यक्ष राधा घिमिरेबाट प्राप्त प्रेरणाले महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका खेलेको छ।
